Think Cooler: On Cancer and Risk →
My current project is a lovely collaboration between Biomedical Communications and Cooler Solutions Inc. Therachoice is an educational tool designed to help individuals understand different cancer therapy choices and their associated risks. The project has a strong focus on visual risk communication. We live in a world full of uncertainties, however, most of us have an aversion towards the...

Used CMS and revamped my website!
Back from AMI! Baltimore was so HOT but I enjoyed the interesting architecture of the Tremont Grand! Wish that I brought a phone to capture the unique look of each room.
I hope that I’ll still be around for AMI 2012 in Toronto~
^ I revamped my website! Check it out at julieman.com , though it’s not that different compared to my old layout, just switched the navigation element to...

Need to draw/create more
I’ll be attending this year’s Association of Medical Illustrators meeting in Baltimore MD, July 20-23, 2011.
Polished up my pathology piece to submit to the AMI Salon. It’s not too different on web, but I think it will print better since details are most apparent in print!
Sketch from when I was volunteering at FITC Toronto.
Maybe I’ve posted this before but I found...

Zoo sketching - Feb 27 2011!
Went zoo sketching with Nicole, Dan and Paul yesterday :). I thought it would be warm enough to sketch outside, but our fingers got cold and stiff pretty quick, so we drew indoors whenever we could. When it started snowing, our papers got wet and my ink started smudging really badly! Nicole’s col-erase turned into a watercolour pencil!!

What's in your bag?
a drawing meme that was going around!
It was super windy today, so windy that it stung my eyes and made them water! Though Toronto will never as brutal as -50C in Edmonton!! I need to practice drawing older ladies.
I went to BMC club last night! Great turn out and good conversations and company all around!
Bea, Diego, Joyce and I have been working on a new publication as design editors. IMS...

Pathology assignment
I’m coughing a lot and I can feel pain in my throat!! This bodes well for the critique this week.
biomedical layman communication…
me: sad/ironic that I’m rendering this when I can feel my own inflamed/swollen throat nodes
wk: what are these
me: lymph nodes (full of immune cells)

athletic body diversity reference for artists →
Posted by Nina Matsumoto!
This is a photoshoot of various Olympic athletes by Howard Schartz and Beverly Ornstein titled “The Athlete”. Like many others I tend to fall into the trap of drawing the same body type over and over for athletic characters. This photoshoot serves as awesome reference reminding us artists that strong bodies come in all kinds of shapes and sizes and muscles show up...

Who to blame for this...
I grew up watching a lot of “wuxia” martial art dramas/movies! I actually knew how to use an abacus when I was younger.

I wish there was a reasonable and short explanation for these, but there isn’t…

drew these randomly on the back of some really old papers.
Most people like to draw pretty girls or good looking men, but I really enjoy drawing older men!?
Ladies Making Comics: The Grand Lady Comics... →
ladiesmakingcomics:
Feelings of blogger inadequacy, I haz them.
I feel like every now and then I’ll find like ten lady comics creators on Tumblr that I didn’t realize were on Tumblr, even if I know their work. I know there’s no way in the world for me to know everyone on the internet and their social networking…
There was never a doubt that I’m a comic-drawing nerd…

Stationery talk: erasers
We all have our preferred stationery- I thought I’d talk about mine since I have it all laid out on my table right now. I prefer ones that are soft and leave minimal dust (or makes dust that can be combined and rolled).
PENTEL hi-polymer soft: got this from ONE’S from a friend who bought it at Pacific Mall. It’s soft, and pentel does not disappoint! Does not seem to be...

baby blocks
(Pen) My plans for my Toronto Notes illustrations because the horizontal space constraint and font specs killed the original layout.
This semester has been really fast paced so everything is a bit of a blur!

aka bones in Flash. Bones, such fickle, fickle creatures. I did used shapes, then movie clips, and then returned to rigging shapes again. Why was my “copy pose” option grayed out? So many mysteries.
Could I see a hat wobble? Sadly you can not see the hat wobble or blinking in this animated GIF because I had a movie clip embedded in a movie clip.
It’s still pretty silly and...

England
Truly belated post!
I was in England briefly to attend my sister’s graduation! 1 week was definitely not enough, but being involved with EIT, Toronto Notes and general student debt limited my time there!
First impressions after taking the “tube”/subway back from the airport…

Toronto Zoo with BMC!
Went to the Toronto Zoo (my first time!) to sketch animals with some of my classmates + more! Nicole and Dan, thanks for the invite, I had a lot of fun! They are both really pro at navigating the zoo! The sun was shining like crazy, and I think it really wore us out (and blinded us while staring at the white white pages of our sketchbooks).
Other visitors are all “oohhh artists!!!...

Graphic Medicine →
Graphic Medicine is the idea that comics can play a role in the delivery of health information.
My EIT clinical supervisor gave me a copy of Graphic medicine: use of comics in medical education and patient care (Green, M. J. and Myers, K. R. 2010) and I found the link to this website.

Voyage Fantastique
I was surfing a bunch of illustration blogs and ended up on A Journey Round my Skull, which showcases a lot of vintage illustration.
In particular, I found the posts on Le Livre de Sante very interesting. It seems to be a french health encyclopedia comprising of 20 books.
What’s also wonderful is that the artist for each illustration is posted! I see some Frank Armitage work! Great to...
